In April 2015, Nush and I packed up our little family for a holiday on the gorgeous island of Sri Lanka.
It was our kids first visit to the country where their grandparents on Nush's side come from. These photos document some of the great experiences we had when we were there. From our journeys across the island, driven by our most patient driver - Samman, we sampled beautiful food, saw all manner of wildlife, stayed in stunning hotels, and caught up with family from across the world.
We based ourselves in Dehiwala, a southern district of Colombo. In an apartment rented by Johnny & Debbie, on Siripala Road, we drank Lion lager, ate plenty of curry, and hid away from the searing mid day heat, and venturing out most nights to various local spots.
On our travels around the island we stayed at numerous hotels, from the stunning to the practical. Our trip would not have been complete if we had not gone back to the location of our wedding 9 years previously - the sumptuous Kandalama hotel in Dambulla - the word picturesque is too quaint to explain this haven set against a huge outcrop of rock and overlooking the Kandalama basin. From the infinity pool you can gaze out over the lush countryside and track flocks of birds of all colours.
Elephants, turtles, wild deer, water monitors, spiders, plenty of fruit bats, and even a baby croc. We got close, perhaps too close on some occassions, to wild life that helped us remember that we're individually very small compared to the species that we share this earth with. The elephants played in the river at Pinnawala and came close enough to take bananas from us that we could feel their breath on our toes as they humpfed their trunks on the ground near our feet.
One of my favourite lakes to sit near and while away a humid afternoon is the lake in the heart of Kandy. Whilst the family wandered around the sacred tooth relic sightseeing hotspot, I took the chance to grab some me time with my trusted 7d.
